"Hin-Ryu Kempo" is a variant on something called "Shaolin-su Chuan-Fa", or Shaolin Temple Boxing. Along with the basics of karate (i.e. kicks, punches, blocks, etc.), Sensei John teaches several different "Ways of Movement" that include: the five basic animals of the Shaolin Temple; juijitsu techniques for defense against grabs and defense from the ground; three different kinds of forms (scripted patterns of movement); and more. All students, children and adults alike, can draw benefits like increased body strength and balance, better mental focus, and increased cardiovascular endurance. Children especially can benefit from better coordination, improved large/fine motor skill development, fine-tuned focus, and, most importantly, an increased feeling of self-worth and self esteem. (The kids really like the fact that karate class is a class where they are actually encouraged to yell; a KIAI, or the common sound of "HI-YAAA" heard in karate classes everywhere, is actually a controlled release of breath at the end of a technique! And it can be, and should be, LOUD!). Sensei John has a program geared specifically towards children called True Colors; this program reinforces those all-important life lessons taught during class that we need to learn to become responsible people and effective, productive citizens later in life. Adults find that they get into better physical shape and tend to stay that way; increased joint flexibility, increased balance (both physical and mental), and even the ability to relax are just some of the benefits. click here to view our schedule for days and times available for this class |
